Third and Fourth period reading RtI is finishing up with the "Rewards" program we began at the beginning of the trimester. Within the last six weeks the students have learned many new strategies to improve their reading fluency, which in return, improves reading comprehension. Every week students have taken fluency tests and every week scores have improved. After the last lesson, we will return to work from the Inside as well as the Bridges to Literature series and apply the new strategies they have learned.

In second period Math, we have finished Chapter 5 of the Mathematics Course 2 book. This Chap included working with integers. Beginning on Monday, we will start our unit on fractions.

Rewards program

In reading RtI third and fourth period, we have completed three lessons in the Rewards program. Students caught on quickly to the daily routine that the program requires. Although, the first two lessons did not include many unknown words, the students learned the process of sounding out words using vowel blends, prefixes, and word parts. I look forward to seeing their fluency skills increase throughout the trimester!

In second period math, we are continuing chapter 4 in the mathematics book. Next week we will focus on probability, least common multiple, and comparing & ordering fractions. There will be a quiz Wednesday on Chapter 4.6-4.8.

In 2nd period math class, we are continuing to work on data and statistics in Chapter 3. There will be a quiz on sections 3 and 4 on Wednesday and a quest on Chapter 3 on Friday.

In RtI reading we began Unit 3 of the Inside Series. We will continue to learn about people in history that made a difference during the Civil Rights Movement such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks and Thurgood Marshall.

In RtI math, students are learning about the different strategies used in the problem solving method. Such methods are "Making a Table","Working Backwards," and "Finding Hidden Information."

In 2nd period math, will be reviewing the the Chapter 1 test that will be on Friday, October 14. On Wednesday, while the 8th graders are taking the Explore test, we will be reviewing some basic concepts that need reviewing. On Monday, October 17, we will begin Chapter 2 which covers frequency tables, bar graphs, and histograms.

In RtI math we will be focusing on Greatest Common Factor and reducing fractions.

This week in RtI reading we are continuing to read from the "Inside" series. Unit 2 of the series focuses on the elements of fiction....plot, character, and setting. In class we are continuing to test fluency and reading comprehension on a weekly basis.

In RtI math this week, the focus is long division with decimals, changing fractions into decimals, and scientific notation. Students will be taking a "Mad Minute" test (factors of 4). Next week will test factors of 5.

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. My name is Lisa Schuyler and I will teaching 2nd period math. After a wonderful summer spent with my family, I am eager to start my twelfth year at Lakeview Jr. High.
To remain updated on the events in math class, please check my blog found on the district website (www.ccsd66.org). Information will be updated weekly. The topics we will be covering this year in class are decimals, fractions, measurement, problem solving, equations, and geometry.
Student's grades in math are composed of the following items:
Homework: Homework will be assigned on a daily bases. However if I feel the class needs further instruction on a new concept or skill, I will not assign homework. On assignments that cover new concepts students will receive completion points. Three points will be given when the assignment is completely finished. Assignments that are not complete will receive a zero. Review assignments will be taken as a grade. Missing work can be completed for a late grade as long as they handed in before the unit test. If your child does not understand the homework, they are highly encouraged to visit me in the morning.
Quizzes/Tests: Quizzes are given three to four times during a unit. Point values range from 20 to 40 points. Tests are usually given every four to five weeks. Point value range from 60 to 80 points. Partial credit is given on quizzes and tests based on the work the student shows. If your child receives a D or F on any test or quiz, corrections can be made to improve their grade. All corrections are due the day after they get their tests back.
ISAT Practice: We also use class time to prepare for the ISAT test. Problems will be in the form of multiple choice, short answer, and extended response.

In first period language arts, we are continuing to work with direct quotes. The students practiced punctuating declarative, imperative and interrogative sentences with quotations. We also learned how to write quotations within dialogue which will be our focus next week. In third period reading, we are continuing to read "Taking Sides" by Gary Soto. They will be reviewing on Wednesday and Thursday. The quiz on chapters 1-8 will be on Friday. In 8th period math, we began our money unit. This week we reviewed identifying and adding coins. On Monday, will be finishing learning about the value of money. We will then continue or unit with budgeting, sales tax, price increase and working with interest.

In 1st period language arts students will be using a critique sheet to check their character sketches. This essay follows the same format as the persuasive essay. The checklist ensures that the students have all the required components of the character sketch, that detail is included and that the student used correct grammar, punctuation, and grammar. After critiquing their own, they will peer edit a classmate's, then conference. Final drafts are due on Wednesday, March 23. On Tuesday, we will begin learning about quotations and how to use it correctly within our writing.

In 3rd period reading class, we will continue reading Taking Sides by Gary Soto. We will continue to learn new vocabulary while strengthening our inferencing skills and predicting skills. Students will also complete a character map of the characters we have met so far.

In 6th period RtI reading, we will continue doing activities that focus on inferencing skills. On Friday, the students are excited to play the spelling game Boggle.

In 8th period math, we have finished the fraction unit! This week we will learning about range, mean, median, and mode. After spring break we will begin the "money" unit.

ISAT testing has been completed! Thank you to all the students for their hard work while preparing during the weeks prior to the tests.

In 1st period language arts we will be continuing the writing process and will begin planning and writing a "Character Sketch." The "Character Sketch" involves the students writing about someone they admire and know very well. The essay follows the same format as the persuasive essay we completed a few weeks ago. In class, students will follow the same format. We will break the essay into parts and focus on one component at a time.

In 3rd period reading we will begin reading the novel "Taking Sides." We will begin the unit with prereading activities that will focus on ethnic diversity and social classes. Through out the story we will be reading as a group, independently and conduct literature circles. We will complete activities that focus on all elements of a story, vocabulary, and complete character analyses.

In first period language arts, we completed writing our first persuasive essay! I am very impressed with how well the students worked and the effort they put into their rough drafts. In class today (Friday), teacher edits were done and the second rough draft is due on Monday.

In third period reading, we are continuing with the second unit in the Inside series. We will be reading Film Fright beginning on Monday. Preparation for the ISAT's will begin the week of February 7.

In eighth period math, the students are diligently working on fractions. Although they have become frustrated at times, their hard work is paying off. This week we have reviewed finding the LCD (least common denominator) and then focused on adding fractions without common denominators. We will continue with subtraction next week. There will be a quiz on Friday, February 4.

In 1st period language arts, we have completed a graphic organizer in preparation for the persuasive essay. Students learned how to write a thesis statement and then thought of 3 reasons to support their thesis. Today they learned about attention getters and the three types they could use. Next week, we will continue to write 3 body paragraphs which will include one topic sentence and two transitional sentences. The majority of the writing process will be done in class.

In third period reading, we will be starting the first story, Frankenstein, in our next unit from the Inside series. Within this story we will be focusing on the plot. We will also learn about prefixes and how we can use them to decode unknown words in a piece of writing.

In math, we will be continuing to work on fractions. We have learned how to add and subtract fractions with a common denominator. We have begun adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Next, we will add and subtract fractions without a common denominator.

In 1st period Language Arts, we will begin writing a persuasive essay. Students will learn the correct format and learn the major components of a writing a persuasive essay such as thesis statement, transitional sentences, and effective introductions and conclusions. The writing process will be a "step-by-step" process and we will focus on each component separately. The majority of the writing will be in class.

In 3rd period Reading, we will continue reading from the Inside series. Our next unit is called Creepy Classics beginning with Frankenstein.

In 8th period Math, we are continuing fractions. Students will have a quiz on Thursday on adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators. Next we will focus on adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

In language arts first period, we are continuing to learn about adjectives. We will finish up the unit with proper adjectives. On Thursday we will review for Friday's quiz.

In reading 3rd period, students received a written explanation for the book report that is due Tuesday, January 18. Students are to make a poster board explaining the plot of the book they read. Each poster board, is to include the title and author of their book, and 8 boxes. In each box a well detailed picture needs to be hand drawn with a written explanation underneath the picture. All pictures need to be in color. The explanations underneath, can be hand written or typed. On Tuesday, January 18, the students will present their poster boards to the class.

In math 8th period, we are continuing to work on fractions. This week students will learn to add fractions with common denominators (changing to mixed numbers included). We will begin to cover subtraction of fractions but will continue the week of January 18.

In first period language arts, we are continuing to work on narrative essays. Students filled out story maps which included characters, setting and plot. We discussed and practiced how to write a "attention getting" introduction to their story. Through out the rest of the week we will be working in class on the rough and final drafts. After the holiday break, we will focus on parts of speech, specifically adjectives. Learning and reviewing adjectives will help improve our creative writing.

In reading third period, we are working from a new series called "Inside." This series incorporates and focuses on specific reading skills and genres in each story. We started the series with natural disasters. Last week we read about Hurricane Katrina, this week we reading about earthquakes. After the holiday break we will take the first week to read and discuss volcanoes. After we finish the last story, we will take a quiz on the vocabulary covered in the unit and comprehension of the stories.

In 8th period math, we are staring our second week on fractions. We have worked on equivalent fractions, ordering and finding the greatest common factors. This week we are reducing fraction to lowest terms. After the holiday break, the class will add and subtract fractions with common denominators.

Language Arts (1st period):

After focusing on writing well detailed paragraphs, we focused on grammar. The students learned verbs. We focused on action verbs (mental and physical), verbs of being, irregular verbs, verb tenses and verb phrases. Beginning next week, we will redirect back to writing. Students will focus on writing multiple paragraphs and learn when to begin with a new paragraph. We will also learn to complete an outline which will aide with paragraph writing.

Math (8th period):

After a few weeks and extensive practice, students have greatly improved their division skills. While learning how to do long division without a calculator, students have also improved their knowledge of multiplication facts. Next week, we will begin our Fraction Unit. Students will use manipulative to gain knowledge and understanding of fractions. We will also learn to add and subtract fractions as well as reduce to lowest terms and change mixed numbers into improper fractions.

In language arts class (1st period) we have been working extensively on writing a well developed paragraph. We have been focusing on topic sentences and descriptive supporting sentences. Before focusing on writing multiple paragraphs, we will be spending time learning about verbs. We will be focusing on action verbs (physical and mental), verbs of being, linking verbs, verb tenses, helping verbs and verb phrases, and irregular verbs.

In reading class (3rd period), we spent time focusing on the skill of "main idea". Through supplementary activities, we practiced recognizing the main idea of paragraphs, as well as short stories. The class also practiced finding the information that supported the main idea of what they read. Accelerated reading tests need to be taken in my room by Thursday, November 4.

In math class (8th period) we learned and practiced multiplication, multiplication with decimals, and multiplying money. Next we will focus on long division with and without remainders. We will also practice using the skills we have learned to solve word problems.

In reading class, 1st period, we will read one more story ("Laughing Gas) before taking a test on the stories we have read. The test will cover "The Mad Puppet","Teeny, Tinny, Tinny Visitors", "Aurthur's Thanksgiving Emergency","Lee Bennett Hopkins," and "Laughing Gas." Students will be tested on vocabulary, characters, on comprehension of the stories. The test and review will be during the week of October 18.

In language arts class, we will continue to focus on writing well developed paragraphs. This week we practiced recognizing and writing topic and supporting sentences. We will now practice putting them all together.

In math, 8th period, we will learn and practice multiplying a 3 digit number by 1,2 and 3 numbers....without a calculator!

***The eighth graders will be taking the Explore Test on Wednesday, October 13 during 1st - 4th periods. Make sure you get a good night's sleep Tuesday night and eat a healthy breakfast Wednesday morning!!!

In first period language arts class, the students will be focusing on recognizing a topic sentence within a paragraph and writing an effective topic sentence. This is the first step to take before writing a well developed paragraph then a well developed essay or story.

In third period reading class, we will be focusing on the main idea of a pragraph and short story. Next week we will be preparing for the test over the first four stories we read in the reading book. The test will be on Thursday, October 14 and will cover vocabulary, characters and comprehension of the stories.

In eighth period math, we will be continuing to do word problems. Last week we focused on recognizing important information and key words within addition and subtraction problems. This week we will focus on multiplication and division problems. On Friday, students will be expected to recognize what operation to use to solve a problem based on the information learned in class.

Last week in 1st period language arts, we learned about simple subjects and complete subjects of a sentence. We also continued to practice writing well detailed sentences. Next week we will focus on simple predicate and complete predicate. Students will also do the third lesson in their spelling book. The unit and sentences will be assigned on Monday. Both, as well as the test, will be on Friday, October 1.

In 3rd period reading, we are continuing to read some short stories. We finished "Arthur's Thanksgiving Emergency" and focused on inferencing skills throughout the reading. Next week we will be reading "Lee Bennett Hopkins Interviews Daniel Manus Pinkwater" and focus on sequencing. During the week of October 4 there will be a short story test on the four stories we read as well as the vocabulary. Book report journals are due on Thursday, September 30.

In 8th period math, we have finished chapter one of the text. Next week, students will focus on addition and subtraction word problems. We will discuss the process of answering word problems and focus on how to solve them, as well as recognize key words.

In 1st period language arts, the students finished learning about nouns as well as plural nouns, common and proper nouns and possessive nouns. Next week, we will begin working with verbs. We will do activities that involve action verbs, linking verbs and verbs of being. Students will also be expected to be working on their second lesson of their spelling books. The unit and sentences will be due on Friday. We will be taking the test on Friday also.

In 3rd period reading class we will begin reading "The Mad Puppet" aloud in class. Students also have a silent reading book that they should be reading independently or at home with their parents. As they read, students should be filling out a reading log which includes the major events and a personal response for each entry. No book report will be assigned for this first book just a review of their reading log.

In 8th grade language arts class the students finished thier first essay the "Choices Essay" and presented thier first presentation of the year. Each students presented a "Me Bag" speech which required them to bring in 6 objects that represented them. I always enjoy this assigment because it is a great way to get to know all of them a little better! Next week we will begin grammar and the wonderful world of nouns.

In reading class we began the short story unit and read "The Lady or the Tiger." After reading the students were asked to write an ending to the story. Next week we will read "Raymond's Run."

On Friday all the 8th graders will go on a field trip to Irons Oaks. At Irons Oaks each homebase will work together to solve physical activities. This is a great way for the students to get to know each other, work together and have an enjoyable day. Remember to dress appropriate for the weather and to bring a sack lunch and a drink.

The 8th graders have had a wonderful start to the school year. Today we visited the IMC for a book talk provided by Ms. Hagensee. The students were able to choose and Fiction novel. Students will be asked to read the book at home and bring it back to school for silent work.

The Ride Janie Ride Fundraiser was a great success! Due to the big and generous hearts of the Lakeview student body, $13,000.00 was raised for three recipients battling cancer. On Monday, the Ride Janie Ride staff came to Lakeview for a special assembly, where we presented them a check and in return presented us with a plaque with expressed their gratitude. Thank you to all the students and families for their generosity.

For Wednesday, all 8th grade students need to bring a stamped envelope for Language Arts class. Please do NOT write on it!

RIDE JANIE RIDE

The students have done an AMAZING job with the school wide fundraiser RIDE JANIE RIDE which is donating money to three individuals who are suffering with various forms of cancer of the blood. One of the three recipients is a student at Prairieview and another is the brother-in-law of Mrs. Nino. The students of Lakeview have well surpassed the hopes and expectations of the teachers and administration. In addition to donating their own money, many students have taken it upon themselves to collect and/or raise money for this event. Thank you to all the students and families for the generous donations and time that has been given toward this fundraiser! For more information please visit www.ridejanieride.org.

During the week of April 12, we will be continuing the poetry unit. The students have been doing a great job reading various poems in class and writing thier own. On Tuesday, we will be explaining the Poetry Portfolio to all the classes. The poetry portfolio will be based on one theme and include their favorite published poems as well as originals.

Some DGS students will coming the Lakeview on Tuesday morning to share some information to the 8th grades class. They will show a brief slide show as well as answer question.

During the week of April 5, the students will begining the poetry unit in reading class. We will be reading and discussing a variety of poems in class. In a few weeks the students will be writing some poetry of their own. The students will also be doing some creative writing in language arts class. Throughout the year we have given specific formats and guidelines for them to follow and now it is time for them to let their creative minds flow.

Next week the 8th graders will give their persuasive speeches that they have been preparing for all week. The requirements for the speech are listed below. For Monday, their typed outlines are due.

LANGUAGE ARTS 8
PERSUASIVE SPEECH REQUIREMENTS

1. The speech must be 4-5 minutes long. YOUR GRADE WILL DROP A FULL GRADE IF YOU DO NOT STAY WITHIN THE DESIGNATED TIME FRAME.
2. You must use your OUTLINE, placed on NOTECARDS, to deliver your speech.
3. Eye contact is crucial for persuasion. Do not read from your note cards. Use them as a guide only. Reading your speech will result in a grade NO HIGHER than a D.
4. You must have a catchy introduction and a solid conclusion. DO NOT use the words "My speech is on..." or "I'm going to try to persuade you..." in your introduction, nor "I have just given you..." or "I have just told you..." in your conclusion.
5. Your persuasive purpose or intent must be CLEAR. It should be stated in your thesis statement, which is the last sentence in your introduction. Take a stand on an issue and convince your audience to side with you.
6. Be prepared to go on the day you are assigned. Failure to present your speech at that time will result in a ZERO.
7. You will be graded on delivery, length of speech, and persuasiveness.
8. Give me your final draft outline and bibliography on the day you deliver your speech, right before you begin speaking. You will need 2 copies of your outline. One typed to give to me, and one placed on note cards to use during your speech.
9. You must use at least five sources for your speech. You may not use two of the same source. For example, you may not use two 3Newsweek magazines.
10. You should use approximately 10 pieces of borrowed information in your speech, citing your source for each borrowed piece of information.
11. You will have approximately 5 class periods to do research. Any additional research must be done on your own time.
12. Speeches will begin on Tuesday, March 23rd.

On Monday in language arts we will beginning preparation for the persuasive speeches. Through out the week, you will receive an explanation of the requirements of the speech as well as the topic you will be speaking about. All speeches will be between four and five minutes long. You will be completing an outline as well as a bibliography. On Tuesday, you will be selecting a topics. Research for the speeches will begin on Monday, March 15 and speeches will begin on Monday, March 23.

The ISAT tests will be given to Lakeview students next week Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. (March 2nd-5th).

Students, you have done a great job in class preparing for the test so make sure you get a good night of rest and eat breakfast before the test each day. Don't forget a few sharpened #2 pencils, a calculator and silent reading book.

ISATs are not far away and in preparation the next two weeks will be very busy!!!

We have begun practicing extended reading responses based on our reading of The Outsiders earlier in the year. The students will also practice by doing a timed extended response later in the week. We will also review the format of a persuasive essay and do a practice essay in class!

We will be continuing to read Romeo and Juliet and will do a compare/contrast book report which will be due on Monday, February 22.

In RtI, we will also be preparing for the ISAT test. We will do activities which will focus on reading comprehension and an extended reading response.

This week we began reading Romeo and Juliet. In Act I, Romeo and Juliet have fallen in love and found out their families are ememies (oh no)!!! On Monday, we will review for Tuesday's quiz on Act I and continue reading.

This week the students participated in the beginning of spirit week. Today was PJ/Snuggie day. I completely enjoyed seeing the 8th grade students adorn their school spirit.

Monday is Ugly Shirt Day. All students should find their ugliest shirt and show it off on Monday. The Pack the Place games are on Wednesday and Thursday. Please come and show your Spartan Spirit!

The 1960's unit is almost at an end! The students have finished performing their debates and their hard work has paid off! On Monday the students will begin writing a poem which will focus on an important topic of the 1960's. The poem will be due on Wednesday, January 27 and will be shared later next week.

Students have been using class time and time outside of school to prepare for the 1960 debates that will begin Wednesday, January 20 and continue through Friday, January 22. As of today, each student should have 50 note cards of information they can use during their debate. Each student needs to understand both sides of the each debate topic and have questions that pertain to each side of the debate. Today, students received information about the bibliography they will hand in at the time of their debate. This weekend should be used to organize the information they have and form valuable questions/facts to share. The assignment is worth 100 points in language arts and 100 points in reading class.

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! Upon their return, the 8th graders have watched videos and taken part in discussions regarding important events that occurred in the 1960's. They also received information regarding the debates that will take place on January 20-22. Today everyone found out what role they have in the debate and what topic their debate covers. It would be a great idea for everyone to take time this weekend to familiarize themselves with the topic they were assigned to. Below is listed an overview of the 1960's unit.

***This project is worth 100 points towards your L.A. grade, and 100 points towards your reading grade.
***At the beginning of each debate, reporters are required to turn in AT LEAST 6 questions and possible answers (in final draft form) for each character in their debate.

In January the 8th graders will begin the 1960's unit in language arts. Within the 4 week unit, students will watch informational videos and participate in class discussions involving the important events within the decade. Students will also research a particular topic and participate in a formal debate.

THE OUTSIDERS

In reading class we have finished reading the novel The Outsiders. The students really enjoyed the book and did well through out the unit. The students did an activity today in which they wrote a paragraph about which character they were most similar to in the novel. We will beginning the Mythology unit.

In reading class the 8th graders will be finishing The Outsiders. As usual, it has been enjoyed by all the students and they have been to excited to read it everyday. After we take the final test, we will be watching the movie.

In language arts we are continuing to write persuasive essays. We have taken the students through each part of the writing process. Today we worked on the first body paragraph and we will continure with the second and third body paragraphs and conclusion early in the week. The rough draft will be due on Wednesday.

This week in language arts we will begin writing our third essay of the year, a persuasive essay. This essay follows the same format as the expository essay (Character Sketch). It does not require any research because the students write about something they are already familiar with.

Also, the polished draft of the Character Sketch is due Tuesday, November 10. This is worth 10 points. Students need both their graded final draft and polished draft to earn the 10 points.

In reading we are continuing to read The Outsiders. We will taking a quiz on Chapters 6-8. Students will be quizzed on vocabulary and comprehension of the novel.

In RtI, we will be focusing on context clues. We will be doing an activity with vocabulary from The Outsiders which will help them on Tuesday's quiz.

The 8th graders have finished the second essay of the year, the expository, so we will be taking a short break form writing to focus on grammar. Today we began subject/verb agreement and will continue in that content area for the majority of next week. We will be taking the quiz on Thursday.

In reading class we have finished half of The Outsiders. The students have really enjoyed reading this novel which has been a favorite for many years. We will continue to read every day and our next quiz we be early in the week of November 9.

In language arts we finished our first essay which was a narrative and will already begin the next essay, expository writing. Beginning Monday, we will discuss the format for a expository essay and explain the important components of a well written essay. We will take a "step-by-step" approach, focusing on one component each day.

In reading we will be continuing to read The Outsiders in class and will be taking our first accelerated reader test on Monday.

Explore retakes will be taken Monday!

Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated next week. The students will take part in an assembly Tuesday morning which focuses on peer pressure, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and bullying.

EXPLORE Test

The Explore Test will be given on Wednesday, October 14 during first through fourth period. Downers South High School uses this test to help place students in the correct class their freshman year. It is very important to do as well as you can on this test. Get plenty of sleep on Tuesday night and eat a good, healthy breakfast in the morning. Remember to bring a calculator and #2 pencils (preferably not mechanical) to your first period class.

In reading and language we have just wrapped up several activites. We completed our "Short Story" unit is which we read "The Tell Tale Heart", "The Dinner Party", "The Monkey's Paw", "Raymond's Run" and "The Lady or the Tiger". The students learned a large number of vocabulary words in addition to extensive discussion of the plot and theme of each story. Students also presented their story board book reports. In language arts this week we worked on our second essay of the year, a narrative essay. We coverd different metods to write introductions and the important elements of a well written essay. Rough drafts are due on Monday.

Next week we will be picking our next book report book, read "Flowers for Algernon" and review how to incorporate dialogue into daily writing.

Welcome to RtI Reading. I am one of the language arts/reading and resource teachers here at Lakeview. This is my tenth year at Lakeview. This year I have my own reading and language arts class and also co-teach reading and language arts with Miss Cerney in the regular classroom. I am looking forward to working with your child this year.
The goal of the RtI Reading Program is to teach the student the skills he/she needs in order to be successful in reading. I will be working closely with the 8th grade team and teaching the students reading comprehension strategies to use in all of his/her classes. In the regular language arts and reading classroom students will be writing narrative, persuasive and expository essays. Time will also be spent in the RtI class to assist your child with their daily writing. I like to think of the class as an opportunity to provide your child with useful tools that will help them become more successful readers and writers which will not only help them this year but also prepare them for high school.
The students will be formally assessed twice a month using a program called AIMS Web. This will give us a closer picture as to whether or not the student is making progress. I will also be assessing the students on a daily basis, whether it’s listening to their comments during a group discussion, working with them one on one to check for understanding, or having them read aloud to make sure they’re reading fluently. This close monitoring will help to determine the progress so that at the end of the first trimester, both the parents and I can sit down and discuss what may be working and what we need to change. Whatever the result, the main goal is for the student to achieve success in reading and writing not only in the classroom but in their daily life.
NOTES: Students are expected to have a notebook exclusively for this reading class. Students will be allowed to keep the notebook in the classroom at all times.
STUDENT PREPARATION: Students are expected to arrive on time to class with the necessary supplies/materials for class. For this specific class, students must always have their assignment notebook and their language arts/reading supplies. Although we will be using a textbook in class, the books will remain in the classroom at all times.

This year has gotten off to a great start! I am looking forward to another exciting year. In the past I have co-taught with Mrs. Boyer (formally Miss Lepley) in her reading and language arts class. Although I enjoyed working with her, all good things must come to an end and I am now have the priveledge to co-teachwith our new 8th grade teacher, Miss Cerney, who previously taught 4th grade and Prairieview.

In reading the students have begun reading short stories from the literature book. We have read "The Dinner Party" and "The Lady or the Tiger" and will read "Raymond's Run" next. We will continue the unit for the next couple of weeks then read our first novel of the year. The students also picked a book they are reading for their first book report. This book must be read by Tuesday, September 15.

In language arts, the students have already had a couple opportunities to shart thier work in class. First, they wrote a essay about an important choice that they had to make and this week, they are presenting their "Me Bag" speeches. This speech allows me, as well as the rest of the class, to learn more about each student. Before beginning our first essay, we are going do some work in grammar and focus on nouns.

Curriculum night is scheduled for Thursday, September 10 at 6:45. I am looking forward to seeing you there!

Today in language arts the students started working on their "Poetry Portfolio." Each student's portfolio well be based on a theme of their choice and within the portfolio show how the theme relates to them self. The students are given class time for the remainder of the week to work on their portfolio however they need to spend time at home putting it into final draft. The portfolio is due on Tuesday, April 21. It must be free of error and typed. Requirements and a break down of how the portfolio will be graded is listed below.

THEME PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS
***Your theme portfolio will be based on a theme which you chose. Everything in your portfolio will be a reflection of that theme and how it relates to you. This is meant to be a personal, reflective project.

****This assignment will be due on Tuesday, April 21st, and will be worth 130 points.
You must include the following in your portfolio:

1. A cover which includes your theme and your name
2. A formal introduction of at least 200 words which explains why you chose your theme, how it relates to you, and what you hope to accomplish through this project.
3. A table of contents which organizes your entries
4. At least two poems you have selected from a published author
5. At least two original poems you have written
6. At least one slogan (original or published)
7. The lyrics from at least one song
8. A literary excerpt (short story or novel)
9. An analysis of each entry explaining why you chose it, how it relates to the theme, and in turn, how it relates to you
10. A formal closing of at least 200 words which explains your feelings about your portfolio, and what you think you accomplished through doing the project
11. A bibliography including each borrowed piece of literature or music

PERSUASIVE SPEECHES BEGIN TUESDAY AND CONTIMUE THROUGH FRIDAY !!!!

Below is a copy of the requirements for the speech the 8th graders will be giving. On the day of their speech they need 2 copies of their outline and a bibliography (all typed).

1. The speech must be 4-5 minutes long. YOUR GRADE WILL DROP A FULL GRADE IF YOU DO NOT STAY WITHIN THE DESIGNATED TIME FRAME.

2. You must use your OUTLINE, placed on NOTECARDS, to deliver your speech.

3. Eye contact is crucial for persuasion. Do not read from your note cards. Use them as a guide only. Reading your speech will result in a grade NO HIGHER than a D.

4. You must have a catchy introduction and a solid conclusion. DO NOT use the words "My speech is on..." or "I'm going to try to persuade you..." in your introduction, nor "I have just given you..." or "I have just told you..." in your conclusion.

5. Your persuasive purpose or intent must be CLEAR. It should be stated in your thesis statement, which is the last sentence in your introduction. Take a stand on an issue and convince your audience to side with you.

6. Be prepared to go on the day you are assigned. Failure to present your speech at that time will result in a ZERO.

7. You will be graded on delivery, length of speech, and persuasiveness.

8. Give me your final draft outline and bibliography on the day you deliver your speech, right before you begin speaking. You will need 2 copies of your outline. One typed to give to me, and one placed on note cards to use during your speech.

9. You must use at least five sources for your speech. You may not use two of the same source. For example, you may not use two Newsweek magazines.

10. You should use approximately 10 pieces of borrowed information in your speech, citing your source for each borrowed piece of information.

11. You will have approximately 5 class periods to do research. Any additional research must be done on your own time.

ISAT testing has come to an end! It has been a long week for both the students and teachers and it is now time to get back to our regular routine. In Language Arts the students will beging to prepare for the persuasive speech they will give before spring break. They will receive detailed information Monday regarding the requirements for the speech and will have some time to research in class However, more research is necessary at home.

ISAT testing will be held Tuesday, March 2 - Friday, March 6

All the 8th graders have done extensive preparation for the ISATs in reading, language and math. Over the past week we have been happy with the work they have produced.

To all 8th graders:
You have been working hard in class all week to prepare for the ISATs. There are now just a few, simple things that you can do to make sure your testing experience will be a success!

1). Get enough sleep! We are testing the first 3 periods of the day and you do not want to be tired. So put away the videos games and cell phones and go to sleep at a decent hour!!

2). Eat breakfast. Eating something in the morning will give you energy that you need to focus on the test. Grab a healthy breakfast like eggs or healthy cereal (not Fruit Loops). If you are not a morning eater, at least grab a piece of toast or a granola bar.

3). Come prepared! You need at least 2 -#2 pencils(with erasers) and a calculator. Also bring your silent reading book so you have something to do if you finish before time is up.

4). Concentrate while taking the test. Read each problem, story or question carefully and remember the "test taking tips" that we reviewed in class.

The ISAT test will test the 8th graders in the areas of reading, writing and math. Next week, in reading and language arts classes, we will review and practice writing persuasive essays and personal narrative. We will also focus on a writing an extended response to a give piece of reading material. In math, we will also be reviewing, including how to write an extended response answer.

In reading and language arts will be reading the story Flowers for Algernon and begin practicing for ISATs that are in March. In math we will be taking the Geometry test in two parts. Monday will cover sections 8.1 - 8.5 and Tuesday will cover 8.6-8.8. Students are allowed to have one notecard of notes (front only) for each day.

In reading class we will be finishing The Outsiders. Overall, as expected, the students have really enjoyed reading this novel. The final test will be on Friday, January 23. In language arts on Monday we will be reviewing the format for a play. This will help the students prepare to write their own play in class. Students will work in groups to create a play which includes a character list, scene descriptions and an overall theme. Students will be given class time to work on their plays and presentation will begin later in the week of January 26. Students will be given a rubric and list of expectations on Tuesday, January 20.

Reminder....the Ball room dance will be on Friday, January 23 in the afternoon!

In reading we are continuing to read The Outsiders and should finish in the next few weeks. In math the 8th graders took the test for Chapter 6. On Monday we will be beginning Chapter 8.... Geometry!!!!

Due to the snow day on the Friday before break, the Ballroom Dance has been rescheduled for Friday, January 23 in the afternoon. Also, on your calendars, mark down that graduation pictures for January 29.

The 8th grade has much to do before we begin the holiday break. In language arts on Monday we will finishing our last day of the 1960 debates. There is a science test as well as a math quiz on Wednesday. In reading on Friday we will be taking a quiz on chapters 1 -5 of The Outsiders. There is also quizzes in the encore classes. The 8th graders have been learning how to ballroom dance is PE. They will be showing off their fancy footwork on Friday during the afternoon dance. Please make sure your child is nicely dress and the ladies are wearing comfortable shoes.

This week is a short week due to Thanksgiving break. In language arts we will be continuing the 1960s unit. Students have watched documentaries and have learned much about the economy, politics and lifestyle of the 1960s. Next week we will be covering the year of 1968. A quiz on the information is on Thursday, December 4. After the quiz they students will start to prepare for the debates, which covers topics pertinent to the decade.

The Horse Derby is next Tuesday!!! The horses should be arriving soon and I'm sure all the participating teachers will be practicing to bring their team to victory! GO GREEN !!!!

We are beginning new things in language arts and reading this week! We will be wrapping up the Mythology unit and taking the test on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will begin to read the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Through out the years this novel has been a favorite of the 8th grade class. In language arts we will be beginning the 1960s unit. We will be watching documentaries and having discussions about the politcal and historic events that took place during that time period. The unit will end with the students taking part in an actual debate that they will prepare for during language arts and social studies class.

In Language Arts the 8th grade students will continue to work on the Character Sketch. We have taken class time all week to work on the introductions, thesis statements, body paragraphs and transitional sentences. Monday we will be working on the conclusion and it will be our final day of using class time to complete the essay. Final drafts are due on Thursday, Oct. 30.

In reading class will be finishing reading Monster. The final review will be on Thursday and the test will be on Friday.

On Monday, all students will attend an assembly in celebration of Red Ribbon Week. The assembly will focus on the topics prevalent to teenagers such as dangers of alcohol consumption, drug use and bullying. The students will view a documentary of real life stories told by teenagers whose lives have been affected by these issues.

In language arts class, the 8th grade students will begin writing a character sketch. All students will learn the focus of a character sketch, the format, how to write a thesis statement and transitional sentences. Instruction is a "step by step" process that covers a different aspect of the essay each day. In reading class we will continue reading Monster.

Explore Test
All 8th graders will be taking the Explore Test on Tuesday, October 7. The test will be taken during first through forth periods. The purpose of the Explore test is to help determine the appropriate classes your child will take next year at Downers South. This is an important test! Please make sure your child gets a good night sleep and eats a healthy breakfast!

In Language Arts the students will be continuing working on verbs and will have a quiz on Friday. They will also be receiving their edited rough drafts of their narrative essay on Wednesday. On that day, we will review the rubric and expectations for the final draft that will be due on Friday.

Last week in reading class we began the novel Monster and will continue this week. This novel is about a 16 year old boy who is on trial for felony murder. The novel, written in play form, takes the reader through the events of trial and inner thoughts of the main character as his he awaits his verdict.

In Language Arts the 8th graders will begin writing a narrative essay. Throughout the week, we will be taking them through the steps of writing an essay in the proper format. Students are allowed to pick their own characters and plot for their essay. We will begin on Monday, when the students are to come with three possible plots for their essay.

In Science their will be a test on Chapter 1. All students received a study guide to help them prepare!!!

The first book report for the 8th graders are due on Monday, September 22! The students are to create a posterboard explaining their book through pictures and a short blurb of each picture. A written 1 -1 1/2 page summary of the book also needs to be done. Make sure the pictures are colorful and full of detail and the written summary is in final draft form (typed or blue/black pen). The report is worth 40 points.

Today we finished Chapter 1 in math and will be starting to work with Integers on Monday. There will be a quiz on Chapter 2, sections 1-3 on Thursday.

The Magazine Sale begins on Tuesday, September 23! The PTO is very supportive of the students and staff at Lakeview. Lets return the favor and participate in the sale. If Lakeview sells at least 800 magazines 8 memebers of the staff, incuding myself, will participate in the "Lakeview Derby."

8th grade news

The 8th graders will be taking their first field trip on Thursday, September 11 to Irons Oaks in Olympia Fields. At Irons Oaks the students will be focusing on cooperative learning. Please check the weather and dress apropriately! We will be going "rain or shine"! Also, so not wear any nice clothes or shoes. All activities are done outside and you may get dirty. Remember to bring a sack lunch. There are not any vending machines.

After a short maternity leave beginning in May and a long summer with my kids, I am very happy to be back at Lakeview. I will be, once again, co-teaching Language Arts and Reading with Miss Lepley and co-teaching math with Mrs. Myers. Throughout the school year I will be keeping you updated with the 8th curriculum, including important dates, tests and long term projects. After only a couple of days, I can tell that the 8th grade students are going to be a fun group. I am looking forward to a successful 2008-2009 school year!!!

If your child has not already recieved information regarding our first field trip, they will in the near future. On September 11 we will be going to Iron's Oaks Adventure Center which focuses on cooperative learning. We ask that you have the two permission slips signed and returned, along with a $25 (cash or check made out to Lakeview Jr. High) returned with your child by Wednesday, September 3.

Today is my last day at Lakeview for the 2007-2008 school year. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my second son in the next week or so. Although I am very excited about the birth of my son, I am sorry to miss all the fun end of the school activities. After a year of hard work, it is always enjoyable to see the excitement of the 8th graders as they await the Great America trip, the dance and expecially graduation. The 8th graders have finished researching for their persuasive speeches. They should all have a large handful of notecards (I suggested 50) with important information on each. If they have not finished researching they must finish this weekend. On Monday we will begin organizing our information and eventually have a completed outline that they will use during their speech. Also all students will be taking a science final on Thursday and Friday. They have recieved a study guide which is due on Monday.

In reading, Miss Lepley and I are continuing to read Romeo & Juliet. Next week in language arts, we will beginning persuassive speeches. The stuents will receive an explanations of the expectations and pick their topics. The following week they will be researching in the IMC.

After much preparation the time has come! ISAT testing begins next Monday and continues through Thursday. Please make sure that you get plenty of sleep next week and eat a healthy breakfast every morning!

The second trimester is coming to an end. The 8th grade team has noticed that mnay of the students have ran low on school supplies. Please make sure that your child has the following supplies for the third trimester:

notebook paper
graph paper
pens/pencils
correcting pens
a binder in decent condition
notecards

In Langauge Arts and Reading (Lepley) the students have worked hard preparing for the ISATs. We practiced writing a persuasive essay and completing a reading response. Next week will practice writing a personal narratvie as preparation. ISATs will be held the week of March 10.

The ISATs are approaching quickly! They will take place the week of March 10. Over the next few weeks, both the reading and language arts classes will be focusing on preparing all the students for both the reading and writing aspects of the test.

In addition, both the regular and instructional math classes have been working to prepare students for the math aspect of the the test, which includes written responses. When the test date arrives, all students should feel prepared and confident!

Due to the snow day we had last Friday, the dates for the 1960's debates have been changed. They will be held on Friday and Monday and Tuesday of next week. Students found out the day the will be presenting today in class. They also recieved a final explanation of the requirements, a review of the rubric and all the materials they need to hand in. Miss Lepley and I are looking forward to seeing the results of the all the hard work they 8th graders have done!

This week in language arts and reading, the eighth grades students will be beginning the 1960's debates. In class, they will hear what the debates entail and the expectations. The roles in each debated are two characters, one moderator and one or two reporters. The debate topics are: Women's Issues, The Vietnam War, The Space Race, The Democratic Convention, and Counterculture. Students will be assigned their specific roles by the end of the week and we will be researching next week.

8th graders- Downers Grove South Open House is scheduled for January 28 and 30. It is advised that all studnts to attend. All the teachers will be there to explain the classes and information will also be presented for extra curricular activities.

All students- Come and support the Spartan Girls and boys Baskeball teams for Lakeview Pack the Place Febraury 12 and 13! All students are invited to fill the gym to capcaity to support our teams along with the pep band, cheerleaders and mascot. Along with attending, you can show your Spartan pride buy purchasing a Lakeview T-Shirt for $6.00 or a Spirit Pack for $10.00, which includes pom pons, temporary tattoos and a mini megaphone.

Tis the Season....
In homebase with worked with Mrs. Hayes's class and make holiday cards for the troops in Iraq.

Before break we hope to finish our "holiday" door which will be docorated as a gingerbread house.

Remember to dress nicley for the ball room dance on Friday. You've worked hard to learn all the moves and you want to look your best!!!

Toy Drive

The Pony races are tomorrow! All students have been encourage to wear their team color. Please encourage them as well. My homebase color is green!!! One teacher will be representing a color for the race and the color that wins will receive a delicious breakfast! Go Green!!!

Miss Lepley's class will be finishing reading The Outsiders next week. The final test will be Friday, November 9. As the whole, the students have really been excited to read this popular novel. After they take the test, we will watch the movie which I'm sure they will enjoy!!

Mr. Safranski's students are beginning the "Political Party" project. You should be seeing your child researching diligently!!!

A special thanks to all the parents who came to conferences last night. It was nice to see all of you and touch base on your child's progress!

Explore Test

All 8th grade students will be taking the ExploreTest on Tuesday, October 16. The Explore test is one of the components that Downers Grove South looks for class placement freshman year. Please bake sure you get plenty of rest Monday night and eat a good breakfast Tuesday morning!

Shoe Drive

A school wide shoe drive is currently taking place until Tuesday, October 16. Please look for old gym shoes that you no longer wear. Any size is acceptable. All shoes will be donated to underprivleged communities.

Iron's Oaks

Just a reminder that the 8th grade students will be going to Iron's Oaks for their cooperative learning field trip, Thursday, Sept. 13. Please remember to check the weather and dress appropriately (we will be going "rain or shine). Also, the mosquitoes have been bad lately, you may want to spray on some bug spray before you leave in the morning!
